English Artists » Raymond Campbell

Ray was born in 1956 in Surrey. He was convinced, even as a schoolboy that he could make painting his way of life. Gifted with a natural ability, he has worked fairly consistently towards achieving this goal. (In his time he has been both a Hells Angel and a Gravedigger. He is in fact a big but gentle man.) During the last 10 years, he has exhibited in group exhibitions at both home and abroad and he has been successful at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy four times now. His exhibitions are hugely successful nowadays and are usually complete sell outs.

His career has built up steadily since the late 1970s when he returned to the UK after studying and travelling throughout Europe. He was hugely influenced by the Dutch masters who inspired him to paint his still life work in the Flemish tradition. He has now developed his own individual style that is widely recognised, admired and even imitated.

Ray recently held his first solo exhibition in Australia where he found new collectors appreciating his compositions in exotic foods and lush fruits. Over the years he assembled an interesting collection of items old and new which he periodically includes in his paintings.

The size of his paintings are carefully chosen to give the correct proportions for showing the subject matter in life size.
