Ernest Crofts was born in September 1847 in Leeds. He attended Rugby School, and subsequently developed his interest in art during his time living in Berlin. Having seen the results of war first hand he became one of the most renowned artists of historical and military subjects of the Victorian era. He later studied under Emil Hunten, a German military artist.
Crofts exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in 1875 and soon became famous for his works on the Napoleonic wars as well as the British War and several works depicting the events around the execution of Charles I – Including fine work of Charles on his way to his execution, which we exhibited in our gallery in Tunbridge Wells for many years in the 1970s and 1980s.
Crofts was an Associate of the RA from 1878 and in 1896 he was elected a full academician of the Royal Academy, before, in 1989, becoming keeper and trustee of the RA. He painted the funeral procession of Queen Victoria which he witnessed first hand and is amongst his most important works.
He died in 1911.
