Glynn Williams

Glynn Williams

Glynn was born in Tunbridge Wells on September 10th 1955 of a Welsh father from Pwllheli and an English Mother from Tunbridge Wells. His Grandfather was one of the last people to make Tunbridge Ware… perhaps some of Glynn’s artistic talent has been inherited from him.

Most of Glynn’s boyhood was spent in the Tonbridge area where he attended the Hugh Christie School, achieving A levels in Art and Art history, amongst other things, but he is entirely self taught as a painter.

Leaving school at 19, he first worked in a Grocery shop and then in an Insurance office, continuing to paint in his spare time. by 1980, the demand for his work was such that he decided to devote all his time to painting thenceforth and has gone from strength to strength ever since. His paintings rest in collections in Holland, Germany, Austria, North and South America, Japan and of course England Scotland and Wales.

Ever since his hop picking days as a boy, he has loved the countryside and studies insects and native wild plants as a keen amateur. He very much enjoys painting the countryside and what goes on therein. He delights in the detail of trees and has a wide range of other subjects.

He believes that a painting should be enjoyed and admired, not puzzled over, and is strongly against what he calls “the trendy element” in modern painting. He is firmly of the opinion that four years in the Army Cadet Force as a boy helped to prevent an over sentimental view of life and painting.

He used to write features for an aviation magazine (and has painted a few aviation subjects) and is always delighted to paint transport subjects if the opportunity arises.

His favourite painters are the Victorians, Heywood Hardy, and Miles Burkett Foster (whose works have greatly influenced his style and popular subject matter). He also collects recordings of British Dance Bands of the 1930s, but especially enjoys the music of Ralph Vaughan-Williams (no relation). He now lives deep in the Lincolnshire Countryside with his wife.
