Rex Norman Preston

Rex was born in Birmingham in 1948.From the beginning at school, he enjoyed Art lessons and spent much of his time drawing and painting. In his teens, he was accepted at the Newcastle under Lyme School of Art on the strength of his sketchbooks and then went on to the Derby College of Art.

After College, he worked as a designer at a Printers whilst using his spare time painting. He started selling his paintings in increasing numbers and with growing success. At the age of 21, he did the inevitable thing and became a full time artist. In his early days, he painted (as every good artist should) a wide variety of subjects, but the demand for his landscapes, which are very evocative, led him to concentrate on landscapes which have become a sought after ‘product’.

The main influence on his style is the Derby countryside around him, although of course he has learnt from the likes of Constable, Turner and Monet in particular.

He now travels widely around Britain and now particularly enjoys painting subject matter from Norfolk, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.

Whilst he prefers to paint ‘en plein aire’ his larger works are done at his studio from his own sketches..
