Cyril Wheeler
Born in Taunton in 1913, his early education was at the Temple Technical School in Plymouth and after leaving there, he studied at the West of England School of Art and at the Derby School of Art until he was 21.
Early in the war, he joined the Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry and served three and a half years in the Libyan Desert during which time he rose to warrant Officer Class 1.
In 1946 he married Kathleen and settled in Polperro where he was a keen yachtsman and so combined his passion for painting seascapes with sailing.
Eventually he moved to Tunbridge Wells where he remained until his death (around the late 1980s). In his lifetime he had frequent exhibitions in Tunbridge Wells, and some of his works are in the Town Hall Museum on permanent exhibition.
Much of his art training was in the discipline of Portraits, and he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Sir Stanley Wells who was Lord Mayor of London in 1956 and this fine example of his work now hangs in the Tallow Chandlers Hall in the City of London.
Apart from his portraits and seascapes, he had a remarkable talent for portraying the English Landscape and is still popular 20 years after his death. He was a very gentle man and his character shows in all his paintings, particularly his landscapes. His hobby in later life was making grandfather clocks from matchsticks. Not only was he gentle, he was a patient man too.
