Joelle Rhode was born in Paris and studied mathematics before a long career as a teacher of Mathematics. After such a radically different professional career, Joelle gave free rein to her creativity. Joelle is a self-taught artist. Her creative process is still evolving.
Technique
Joelle Rhode’s creations begin with a desire for colour; a desire for two or three colours that invite themselves onto her canvas. The colours mix directly on the canvas surface, be it on paper or on wood.
Joelle applies three colours in turn. The overlaying of successive
transparent layersgives depth and a light sensation to the works. By pushing back, removing, scratching, wiping, letting the paint run, shapes emerge.
Joelle’s eye then seeps into the light of a natural environment. She feels that in the aspect of a desert, the contrasting colours of a tree, of its bark, the patterns of a shoreline, of a rock, emerge with the potential that will later become the reality of her works.
Joelle Rhode thus creates paintings made of light and dark contrasts evoking horizons, shores, forests, landscapes of sky and water.
