William Francis Burton – English Marine & Landscape Artist

William Francis Burton (1907-1995) was a prolific English marine and landscape artist known for his atmospheric oil paintings.  His rural Norfolk upbringing and his adopted county of Essex provided the inspiration for much of his work. Burton created highly recognisable works celebrated for their golden tones, dramatic skies, and meticulous detail.

Artistic Style and Themes

Burton’s artwork often reflected the coastal scenery, one of his favourite subjects. His most famous painting, Evening Gold, was widely reproduced in 1965 and remains closely associated with his legacy.

His style combined precise draughtsmanship, earthy colour palettes, and distinctive signature elements.

Career and Influences

Burton was self-taught and often acknowledged the influence of his father-in-law, the Irish artist William Crampton Gore RHA (1871–1946). A year spent in Australia (1964–1965) helped him refine his technique. After retiring from the Civil Service, Burton pursued painting professionally, achieving significant commercial success during the early 1960s. By the late 1960s, reproductions of his work were selling more than those of any other British artist, past or present.

Legacy

Sixteen of Burton’s original paintings were reproduced as prints in the 1960s by the London publishers Solomon and Whitehead, helping to cement his popularity with the public. William Francis Burton died in 1995 at the age of 88, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be admired by collectors of British landscape and marine art.
